frequently asked questions about window art
Hand-painted window art can be a cost effective way to catch the attention of passers-by and encourage them to take a closer look. I’ve compiled a list of the questions I am most frequently asked.
How long does window art last?
Hand-painted window art can last a surprisingly long time! Providing no one tries to rub it, or accidentally tries to clean it (this has happened!), you can expect your window to stay fresh for at least 2 months. That said, I’ve had clients who kept their window art for as long as 4 months.
How do you remove window art?
When it’s time to say goodbye to your lovely window mural, you will need the following items:
Window cleaner spray or warm soapy water.
A tile / window scraper with a clean, new blade.
Simply spray the painting with window spray (or soak with hot soapy water) and give it a few minutes to soak in. The paint should peel away fairly easily using the blade. Once you have removed most of the artwork, give the windows a clean with spray and cloth to get rid of any last stubborn bits of paint.
Do you paint on the inside or outside of the window?
Typically, I paint my designs onto the inside of the window. Your artwork is more likely to stay better preserved if it is inside and less exposed to the elements, plus it means the job won’t get rained off!
In certain circumstances, it makes more sense to paint the design on the outside of the window - for example, if there is a tint in the window. In this case, I’ll make sure I use the best materials to protect the mural against the elements.
Will I see a sketch beforehand?
There’s a fair bit of planning that goes into a window mural. Once we’ve agreed a concept and date, I will always send a mock-up design. This will make sure we’re on the same page, and it will also help me work more efficiently on installation day.
How do you write backwards on the inside of the window?
Most elements of the mural are drawn freehand, using the mock-up design as a reference. For trickier bits, like lettering, I will prepare a template to stick on to the front of the window and then trace the lettering backwards on to the inside. A great example of putting the prep work in to make it a more efficient process on the day!
How much does window art typically cost?
The costing will vary depending on the size of the window and the complexity of the design, and I will provide you with a customised quote once I have more information on your space and what you’re looking to achieve. My costs cover design, installation and materials. As a general ballpark, a typical job is likely to sit somewhere between £200 and £400, but each job is different and priced individually.
